The chain
The chain should be lubricated regularly, especially after riding in rain, and have the right slack as the manual says. A chain that is too slack can jump off the sprocket and at worst lock the rear wheel. Too tight, and it wears fast and can damage the bearings. Worn sprockets and chain are replaced together, or the old part wears out the new.
Example
You have ridden a long trip in the rain.
Clean and lubricate the chain when you get home, and check the slack before the next ride.
Measure the slack midway between the sprockets, as the manual says, with the bike positioned as it describes.
