Countersteering
Above walking pace you steer a motorcycle by countersteering: you push the handlebar forward on the side you want to turn towards. To go right, push the right side forward, the bike leans right and turns that way. The harder you push, the quicker it leans. It is also your most important tool for avoiding obstacles.
Example
A pothole appears in your wheel track at 60 km/h.
A short, firm push on the left handlebar leans the bike slightly left, and you pass the hole.
Practise countersteering somewhere safe every spring until you do it without thinking.
