The product rule

The product rule differentiates a product of two functions. You differentiate one and leave the other, then add the reverse. For xexxe^x both terms contain a factor exe^x, which can be taken outside the brackets. The same rule applies when one factor is a logarithm. Differentiate each factor on its own before you put them back together.

(uv)′=u′v+uv′(uv)' = u'v + uv'the product rule
(xex)′=(1+x)ex(xe^x)' = (1 + x)e^xexample

Symbols

u, vu,\ vthe factors

Example

(xex)′=ex+xex=(1+x)ex(xe^x)' = e^x + xe^x = (1 + x)e^x, so the derivative at x=0x = 0 is 11. (xln⁡x)′=ln⁡x+1(x\ln x)' = \ln x + 1, which is 22 when x=ex = e.

Differentiate one factor at a time. Do not multiply the two derivatives.
