Traffic lights

Red means stop at the stop line. Red and amber together means the light is about to turn green, but you must still wait. Green means you may go if it is safe. Amber means stop, unless you are so close that you cannot stop safely. Flashing amber means take extra care and follow signs and right-of-way rules.

red→red + amber→green→amber→red\text{red} \to \text{red + amber} \to \text{green} \to \text{amber} \to \text{red}the order of a normal traffic light

Example

The light turns from green to amber just before the stop line, and the car behind is close.

If you cannot stop without danger, you drive calmly through. Otherwise you stop.

A green arrow beside a red light means you may go in the arrow's direction, but give way to pedestrians.
