Children in traffic

A ball? Brake – a child will follow!
If a ball rolls into the road, a child often follows right behind – without looking. Ease off and be ready to stop as soon as you see the ball.

Children are small, see less to the side and judge speed and distance poorly. They easily forget themselves when playing. If you see a ball roll into the road, a child often follows straight after. Near schools, nurseries, playgrounds and bus stops, drive extra carefully and be ready to stop.

Example

You are passing a school bus at a stop.

Slow down a lot. A child may run out in front of the bus without looking.

Look for feet under parked cars. That way you spot children who might step out between them.
