Sensible and latent heat

Sensible heat changes a substance's temperature without changing its phase, while latent heat goes into the phase change itself while the temperature stays constant. When heating through a phase change, split the calculation into separate steps and add them together.

Q=mc ΔTQ = mc\,\Delta Tsensible heat
Q=mLQ = mLlatent heat (melting/vaporization)

Symbols

ccspecific heat capacitykJ/(kg·K)
LLheat of fusion or vaporizationkJ/kg

Example

0.50.5 kg of ice is heated from −5-5 °C to 00 °C (cice=2.1c_{ice} = 2.1): Q1=0.5⋅2.1⋅5=5.25Q_1 = 0.5\cdot 2.1\cdot 5 = 5.25 kJ. Melting (L=334L = 334): Q2=0.5⋅334=167Q_2 = 0.5\cdot 334 = 167 kJ.

Never use Q=mcΔTQ = mc\Delta T across a phase change – there ΔT=0\Delta T = 0, and you must use Q=mLQ = mL instead.
