Pugh matrix (concept screening)

A Pugh matrix compares several concepts against a reference concept on each criterion, with plus (better), zero (same) or minus (worse). The net score is the number of pluses minus the number of minuses, and is used to weed out weak concepts early, before a more detailed weighted evaluation.

net=(number of +)−(number of −)\text{net} = (\text{number of } +) - (\text{number of } -)net score in concept screening

Example

A concept gets 5 pluses, 4 zeros and 1 minus:

Net score =5−1=4= 5 - 1 = 4.

The zeros do not count in the net score, but show where the concept is equal to the reference.
