Product development process

A typical product development process (Ulrich & Eppinger) moves through planning, concept development, system-level design, detail design, testing, and production ramp-up. The process is often divided into phases with decision points, gates, between each, where the team decides whether to continue, stop, or rework.

Example

At each gate in a stage-gate system, one of three decisions is made: go, kill, or rework and retry.

The earlier a flaw is caught in the process, the cheaper it is to fix.
