Strain and modulus of elasticity

In the linear elastic range, stress and strain are proportional. The slope in the σ\sigma–ε\varepsilon diagram is the modulus of elasticity EE, a material property showing how stiff the material is. Steel has a much higher EE than aluminum or plastic.

ε=σ/E\varepsilon = \sigma/Estrain from Hooke's law

Symbols

ε\varepsilonstrain
σ\sigmastressPa
EEmodulus of elasticityPa

Example

Steel, E=210E = 210 GPa, σ=210\sigma = 210 MPa:

ε=210/210 000=0.001=1\varepsilon = 210/210\,000 = 0.001 = 1 ‰.

EE is a material constant and does not depend on the shape or size of the cross-section.
