Transfer time

How long a file takes to send depends on its size and the bandwidth. File sizes are usually given in bytes, while bandwidth is given in bits per second. One byte is 8 bits, so convert first.

t = \frac{8\cdot S}{B}

time from size in bytes and bandwidth in bit/s

Example

100 MB over 50 Mbit/s:

$t = 800/50 = 16$ s.

Capital B means byte and small b means bit. MB/s and Mbit/s differ by a factor of 8.
