Speed and consumption

Approximate consumption compared with 80 km/h. Air resistance rises sharply with speed.

Air resistance rises sharply with speed, so consumption climbs a lot when you drive fast. Driving at 110 instead of 80 km/h can raise consumption by 20–30 percent. Driving style matters too: look far ahead, use a steady throttle, ease off early before stopping, and avoid needless idling. Correct tyre pressure and little load on the roof also help.

Example

You approach a red light 300 m ahead.

Ease off at once and let the car roll. The light may turn green before you arrive, and you avoid stopping and accelerating again.

A roof box left on all year raises consumption even when empty. Take it off when you do not need it.
