Penalty points

For a number of traffic offences you get penalty points as well as a fine, for example for speeding, failing to give way, crossing a solid line, not securing children and using a handheld phone. If you get 8 points within 3 years, you lose your licence for 6 months. Each point is deleted after 3 years.

∑points in last 3 years≥8\sum \text{points in last 3 years} \ge 8then you lose your licence for 6 months

Example

You got 3 points two years ago and 3 points last year. Now you get 2 more.

3+3+2=83 + 3 + 2 = 8 within 3 years: your licence is suspended for 6 months.

During the probation period offences have stricter consequences. If you lose your licence then, you must retake both the theory and the practical test.
