Emergency vehicles

Blue lightsMove right and slow down
When a vehicle with blue lights comes, give way: move right as far as is safe, slow down and stop if needed. Do not brake sharply or drive into a junction on red.

When an emergency vehicle signals with flashing blue lights, you must make way, and stop if necessary. Move right as far as is safe and slow down. Do not brake sharply, do not drive through a red light to let it pass, and be ready for more emergency vehicles to follow the first.

Example

You are waiting at a red light and an ambulance with blue lights comes from behind.

Stay where you are, or move slightly aside if you can do so safely without entering the junction. The ambulance will find a way past.

Check your mirrors often, especially in heavy traffic. Then you see the blue lights early and have time to plan.
